Sign-stealing is an old and time-honored form of recreation for immature peple. I recall that when I was in college (by definition immature), my roommate had a "curves ahead" sign, and I had one on my top bunk that my best friend and I had stolen from a factory in the middle of the night that said "trucks use lower entrance". We were all very proud of that sign's layers of meaning.

As a fellow Austrian-American, I would suggest that your home town should take it all with a grain of salt, laugh at the silliness, and offer spare town signs (plus t-shirts and mugs) for sale so people don't have to steal them. Other towns with names people (not always just foreigners) considered silly or scandalous have done a similar "if you can't beat them, join them" tourist trade. Better to laugh with the silly tourists instead of resenting the silliness and just being laughed at.

It's great that you are proud of your town - whatever it's called.

At least it is unique :)

Just ignore it, people can be very close minded when it comes to other cultures. Specially Americans;) its actually kind a funny.

I think that you can write the whole name of the city, because it is not something bad... this time it is a name and I don't think you should be so "careful" about how you write it. this is my oppinion, of course!

Don't worry about it. Let them be ignorant. When they read it in an article then they'll believe you and you can say those lovely magical words of vindication. "I told you so."

They'll catch up in mentality in time.

Are you complaining about complainers of your towns name? thanks for sticking up for us Americans, it's so hard to sneak street signs through customs anymore!!
