When was the last year it was legal to smoke on an airplane in America?

    On flights of two hours or less, 1988. On flights of 6 hours or less (which was the vast majority of them, but not all of them), 1990. Smoking on all flights to and from the US was not made illegal until 2000. By then, however, most domestic airlines had outlawed smoking onboard already, so the effect of the 2000 legislation was primarily on foreign carriers.
