    Quick Sweet and Sour Pork

    1 pound boneless pork loin

    1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 medium green pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces

1 medium onion, cut into thin wedges

1 (15 1/4-ounce) can pineapple chunks in juice

1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar

    1/4 cup white wine vinegar

    2 tablespoons cornstarch

    2 tablespoons soy sauce

    Hot cooked rice (optional)

    1. Partially freeze pork. Cut across the grain into 2 1/2 x 2 1/4-inch strips; set aside.

    2. Preheat a wok or large skillet over high heat; add oil. Stir-fry green pepper and onion in hot oil for 2 to 3 minutes or till crisp-tender. Remove from wok. Add more oil, if necessary. Add half the pork to wok; stir-fry until browned. Remove pork; stir-fry the remaining pork. Return all pork to wok; keep warm.

    3. Drain pineapple, reserving juice. In a small saucepan combine the juice, brown sugar, vinegar, cornstarch and soy sauce. Bring to a boil; cook about 1 minute or till thickened, stirring constantly.

    4. Return green pepper and onion to wok. Stir in pineapple and the thickened pineapple juice mixture. Cook and stir until heated through. Serve with rice, if desired.

    Makes 4 servings.

It depends what sort of food you like If you live in the UK Sainsbury's do the recipe cards where you can feed a family for £5, and they advertise this on the TV My partner is Turkish and he makes some lovely meals that don't cost much to make- the food can be a bit spicy but really tasty. He makes a Turkish casserole which involves chopping up some potatoes (enough for however many people are eating), 1 courgette, an aubergine (or an egg plant if you are American), add some diced chicken, lamb or beef (they all taste good), sliced mushrooms, some onion, some tomatoes. Then add some tomato sauce like passata or Ragu- something that is just mushed up tomatoes basically (add a whole jar). If you can find some, add some dried red pepper and chilli powder- but if not then something similar will do to add flavour - but not too much! Leave to cook in the oven till the potatoes are cooked (this can usually be about an hour- depends on your oven) My partner also cooks a really nice quick meal which involves adding plenty of mince (which is cheaper if you buy it from the butchers- I bought a kilo for £4 today), chopped onions, some mushrooms, chopped up tomato and some eggs which you sort of whisk while it cooks in the pan with the other ingredients. This can be eaten with some rice, bread or potatoes. You can add more beg if you want to bulk it up a bit. Turkish meals are nice and healthy and also cheap as quite a few Turkish people don't have a great deal of money so they have to make ingredients go further. If you like soup then I recommend you look up some Turkish soups called Paca and Mercimek which are really nice.
