I love helping my kids with family tree's:
1) Make a tree out of green and brown craft foam and stick your history on it: like this one: http://a1836.g.akamaitech.net/7/1836/24/d5155afd34...
2) http://blog.jalenack.com/wp-content/images/FamilyT...
3) http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/education/wyndeth...
Or just be creative! Hope this helps! =)

you could paint a flower pot put a piece of floral foam into the bottom of it then cover it with spanish moss. Next, take long lengths of flora wire and make a spiral at on end. Stick to non spiral end into the pot, repeat until you have enough to hold all of your pics. make them various lengths, etc. You can insert photos into each spiral. Also, if you are any good at graphics on the PC, you could have the photos be in the center of flowers that you could print, cut out then stick into the spiral.
this is the first idea that popped into my head when reading your question.

you could create a 3dimensional tree using papier mache pulp (or a topographic tree...not entirely 3D, but a raised image on heavy cardboard or a wood panel) then use either bottle caps or cut out shape from cardboard for each family member, then write their name on it, paste on a photo if you have one, and if not draw a picture of them.
papier mache pulp can be purchased at craft store, or you can make your own:
