The stories may not but the character is based on Sue Thomas who began work as a clerk for the FBI and was asked because of her ability to read lips, she was asked to review a surveillance tape whose sound failed. Her success in the case lead her to be an FBI agent. Later she quit. She is known as the first deaf person to work as investigator for the FBI.
