I have an AOL address before I begin my Yahoo accounts, but I am given an option to be notified of answers to my new Yahoo account, or have it sent to my AOL account.
I choose my AOL account.
However, I do receive ads from Yahoo on my Yahoo address.
My Yahoo address is...thissitesuxshit@yahoo.com

No, you don't. And you also do not need a Yahoo mail account to allow other users to contact you. I'm a German user using a German mail provider, Yahoo forwards all mails to that account. So you should be safe with your hotmail account.

Nope, but you need a Yahoo ID, which I believe comes with a Yahoo address.
If you wanted to allow email on your y/a profile, then yes .. you need a Yahoo Mail account for that.

You can use any email address that you want, as long as you have a Yahoo ID.

No, but I just found out you don't lose your ability to read your mail if you get kicked off Yahoo Answers.
Your mail address is still good.
