Can I open a bank account in Canada?

Is it possible for a US citizen, no social ID number, to open a personal checking/savings/investment account in Canada?

Update:

I have a US soc. sec. number, but not a CAN soc. ins. number.

Not really. But what you can do is open a bank account in Canadian dollar.

EverBank an FDIC insured bank has World Currency account would allow Canadian dollars. http://www.everbank.com/001WorldCurrencyAccess.asp...

There are other large financial institutions such as HSBC, Citi that have similar accounts.

    Best wishes.
