    The perimeter of a rectangle is the sum of the lengths of the sides. A rectangle has two length sides and two width sides. In this case, the perimeter has been given to be 54. So:

    2L + 2W = 54

    We know the length is 5 cm longer than the width. So:

    L = W+5

    Substitute W+5 for L in the first formula:

    2(W+5) + 2W = 54

    Distribute the 2 in the first term:

    2W + 10 + 2W = 54

    Combine like terms:

    4W + 10 = 54

    Subtract 10 from both sides:

    4W = 44

    Divide both sides by 4:

    W = 11

    The width is 11 and the length is 16

    2x + 2(x+5) = 54

    2x + 2x + 10 = 54

    4x = 44

    x = 11

    Therefore, the length is 16cm and the width is 11cm.

    Hope this helps
