Honda engines help?

I am thinking about buying a honda from A college student in houston but he has listed "The Bad: I took it to get inspected but it failed so I took it to the mechanic who said the computer wasn't hooked up. I'm guessing the computer was from the original engine so you'll have to replace it. I did install a brand new O2 sensor but of course it doesn't make a difference without the computer. Stats D16Y7 engine with 84K miles KYB shocks with coilovers. 17" Motegi FFZ rims, Brand new 205/40/17 tires in the back and recent ones in the front Recent clutch Brand new plugs A/C components are in trunk (not installed, of course) Engine runs strong and the transmission shifts smooth Current registration till 08/08

" In the add right above this he says the engine runs strong, and lists all the modifications. My question is, does the computer not being hooked up affect the performance of the engine, or does that only affect the emissions tests? My state does not require emissions tests...

Update:

It's on a 93 honda Del Sol

Update 2:

I don't see how he got it to the emissions test if it didn't run.

The "computer" of the car, is the"ECU". And if it isn't hooked up, the car should not run,Period! Something is wrong with that add....

The computer affects everything. You need to get the ECU for that engine. Sounds like the vehicle originally came with a D15 engine and was swapped to a D16Y7. If it's an '93-'95 EX or 92-92 Si Civic, the ECU should be the same as the replacement motor since the EX and Si models came with the D16Y7. If it's any other model other than an EX or Si, you'll need the D16Y7 ECU.

Do you know which trim level you have? If it has a factory power moonroof, it is an EX (sedan or coupe) or Si (hatchback). The factory moonroof will have the power switch to the left of the steering wheel on the dash. This car sounds like it was a project never completed.

That A/C is worth quite a bit if it still works. Honda discontinued selling the A/C systems for pre-1996 Civics about four years ago. If yours works and you won't be using it, you can sell it for a nice sum.

Lastly, go to another mechanic. If the ECU isn't hooked up, the car will not run. The ECU controls and monitors everything on your engine. Your best bet is to get another mechanic to diagnose your car.

  • If the "computer" is not hooked up, the car WILL NOT run - it is as simple as that. I would avoid this vehicle as it was probably ran into the ground with the mindset that the vehicle is some sort of "race car". With those suspension and tire modifications I would bet that the alignment is also way off, especially if the car is lowered. Avoid this vehicle at all costs.

If the computer wasn't hooked up the car wouldn't run.
