Fans - those who want to watch your answers and questions
Contacts - those who you choose to watch

Fans are people that wanted to keep up with you and the question you ask or answer.You can increase your fans by starring , answers, or asking. You also have the option of turning fan mode off. Contacts are just that contacts.

fans add you to their contact list. contacts are added by you to your contact list.
fans take an interest to your Q&A. you add contacts b/c you are interested in someones Q&A.

Fans are people who like your answers and questions.
Contacts are people who can talk to you and such
