Steellhead fishin' ay'... Fish upper Northern Cal., for both "Steelies" and King Salmon (Chinook). One productive way is the old Spin n' Glo trailered by a Roe sack (fresh cured roe with Borax 100% Mule Team and a few more additional little goodie ingrediants added, for me always gets their attention) ;). There are all sorts of different approaches in catchin' that fantastic creature, Hot Shot's (lure) can do a job on them, along with the faithful Lil' Cleo (silver spoon)! Corkies with a yarn tie is a good "safety valve", as well as Glo' Bugs. This be done both drift fishin' from bank and or Drift boat. Link below is a good site for them "Ironheads", sooo ya' just might take a look at it. I know "Fish On" is the universal phrase in the fishin' world, but at times like this for me it's "Steelhead On". Hope I did a little somethin' for ya' other then just ramble on about a love that I have ;) ;) ;)...

If you be unfamiliar with tyin' sacks of Roe, this link has a little kit that makes it easy. I just started usin' it and it cuts down the time factor in tyin' "berrys" up...

I have fished steelhead in the smaller streams feeding from the Great Lakes. Have both drifted spawn sacs and cast with smaller spinners, preferably with a nickel blade and plain. I have also drifted egg imitations and nymphs on a fly rod. Both methods have produced large numbers of fish, hard to say which method is better. I suppose it depends on access and stream conditions.

For great lakes tributaries, I drift yarn eggs, stoneflies and other nymphs through deep chutes and runs.

I use a fly rod, but lots of folks dead drift with long (10-12') rods with mono. Plenty of weight to get the bait down.

Some folks I know use roe sacks (fish eggs in panty hose) and have great luck.

Here in the Pacific Northwest we'll usually float down the river in drifts boats, using roe sacks and drift rods. We're usually going after salmon at the same time.

Pumping the Fish (lifting):a fashion of using the butt of the fly rod in a lifting action to tension the fish into submission to the fly fisher's will. on the instant after the improve, the rod is diminished and the slack line at as quickly as recovered and located back on the reel as you're able to with a spinning outfit.
