My father in-law has just set up one website and is progress of doing another. I know from his experience he gets his income from advertisements from companies - he does a hair and beauty comparison website, and so related businesses will pay him a fee to advertise on his website.

Look into supporting your website with ad revenue. Go to Google and click on their Adsense program.
