My computer rebooted it's self last night?

Is someone tapping into my computer, or is it normal for a Dell Optiplex 110, to shutdown and reboot (black screen and all) on it's own! Normally I turn it off but, last night I forgot and then this happenned? I am running 2000 professional and have not had any real trouble with it. It started making a grinding sound after it came back on ,and was not showing my shortcuts on the desk top,so I got up and turned it off! With so many weird things going on,I had to ask this question. Also the computer was slow, but after cleaning out the disk files and defraging her ,she seems to be her happy old(and I mean OLD),self.

sounds like the hard drive is going bad, what i would do is find out what type hard drive you have go to that manufactures website and download the diagnostic tool for the hard drive.also open the case and see that the all the fans r working especially the CPU fan, because if it isn't it will get hot and shutdown.

Consider that systems have work to do that is scheduled to run when the system is idle. If this fails, the system can reboot on its own. Also when Windows Update runs, it can reboot your system as well. Could be perfectly normal.
