Dream of building your own off the grid cabin? or have you done it? What are/were your biggest obstacles?

For years I have been planning to build my own cabin. I very much want to live a much simpler lifestyle. Info on do-it-yourself, affordable solar power has been my biggest obstacle. Wind power would also be ideal in my area, but there's even less info on that.

Biggest thing is probably location and property.

Currently reside in Boxcar while building house on limited income.

As you have found, solar is not yet affordable for average person.

Currently we use a generator, as I can NOT put up wind unit tower (homebuilt unit) until house is complete.

Previous units I have built used Savonus (vertical shaft) rotor system, geared up to drive 100Amp, Low rpm (only need 1500 rpm) alternators to charge battery bank and using invertors to provide 120 volts AC., with a 5hp gas engine driving similar alternators as back up.

There is quite a bit available on wind power, you just need to search for it.

    Source(s): doing it.

check your library for magazines such as:

    countryside

    Back Home

    backwoods home

    Mother Earth News

They are full of advice and stories about people who have opted to live the simple life outside the city. You can also visit their sites. They have articles about housing, solar power, etc.,etc.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.
