Assuming you don't have the original manual, the best thing you can do is to note the make & model of your WIFI access point/router. Go to that manufacturer's site and look for the manual in the support area. Most if not all post these manuals on their websites. If not posted, then call them. If your WIFI access point was supplied by your ISP, then contact your ISP.
After that, it's easy - just follow the instructions in the manual. Do not follow generic instructions as all are a little different. Any form of security is better than none and most routers/access points have multiple layers of security that can be enabled. If you had to pick only one to enable, turn on WPA (as opposed to WEP). Your access point doesn't support WPA? My advise is to go buy one that does as any kid with the right software and know how can crack WEP encryption and login to your network, given time. These cracks have been available for years (thus, WPA was born).
Good luck and hang in there - you are on the right track.

If you mean the provider supplies the wireless signal direct, this is not ideal for sharing. The only way is to set up a second network card in the connected machine. Then set up internet connection sharing on the wireless connection. Use the Network connection wizard for this. Then all other machines connect through the main machine. A router will NOT work with such a service.

Login to your router's admin interface and turn on WEP or even better WPA encryption. Can't give exact instructions without knowing what band/model router you have. Here's netgear instructions though: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101675.a...
and for Linksys

i think if you type in 192.168.1.1 into the address bar of a computer using the network, it takes you to the router menu and you can lock it from there. i'm not sure if this work for all router but its either linksys or netgear. they may be the same thing.
