First - why do you ask? That might help readers to answer more completely.

In general, most operating systems contain a kernel (which includes functions like scheduling, job dispatch, memory management, and much, much more).

Depending on the operating system involved, (and who's talking about it) the second major component might be an I/O package, but many techies (me included) really consider that more a part of the hardware (sometimes referred to as the BIOS or Basic Input Output System) since it's contained in the PC's hardware. Others might consider the File System to be a second part of the OS since many operating systems let you select which one to use.

Others will tell you that there are more than two, or even only one major component.

As I said, it all depends on why you want to know or how you intend to apply the information. How granular (or detailed) do you want to be?

    Regards -

The Kernal is the main one. But that is like asking what are the main components of a engine, there are a bunch and have to work together, you may want to add more details to get a better answer. on what your looking for.

Easiest way is to buy an "external USB hard drive enclosure". Make sure you get one for IDE / ATA / PATA (all names for the same thing). You fit the old drive inside the box, and then connect the USB cable to your new computer. It will then act like an external hard drive and will get its own drive letter - allowing you to browse the contents and use for extra storage if you want.
