By performance, do you mean speed or security?

Security is better with WPA (wep is easily cracked).

Speed Performance is better without ANY security (in fact can be as much as 30% better depending on cards, routers, and software being used) as there is no encryption / de-encryption having to be run on both ends.

Both WPA and WEP affect throughput near the same level.

    USE WPA for safety.

Both reduce speed compared to an open connection. Normally WEP is faster than WPA. There is a lot of hype over the security of WPA being better than WEP, but a 128 bit WEP key entered as a 26 character HEX code is more secure than WPA with a poor pass-phrase. For normal use WEP is fine, there are too many unsecured networks for anyone to waste their time cracking keys. Always use encryption, otherwise all your transactions are visible to other wireless machines, including user names, emails and even any clear text passwords.

Routers that support WPA and not just WEP are likely newer, and that usually means better performance. WPA vs. WEP is strictly a security thing, and WPA is certainly better in that area, but neither have anything to do with a better signal coming from the router.

I say no security is better but register the mac address of each device u want to connect on the network and thats the best solution and can never be hacked ;D
