Hyundai Accent 2002 Fuel filter?

My friend pretty much ran out of gas. When I met her at the gas station the fuel light had been on for ten miles. We filled it up and it started fine, as it did the next morning. However the third start up wouldn't work. I think its the fuel filter, sucked up a bunch of crud. So I want to replace it! I am sure finding it isn't difficult as I have seen it done on Honda that had two filters. My question is, does anyone know where it is exactly or how difficult it is to replace? I believe its easy....if this doesn't fix it, any idea how much we're talking for a fuel pump....that I will not tackle! She commutes 120 miles each day in a Jeep, she would trash the hyundai except the gas mileage is so much better and she is sinking further and further into a hole by commuting with the Jeep. Any help would be great, feel free to email me!

Update:

Thank you Gary, Kragen it is.....I am willing to try, then if the cheap fix doesn't work I'll see who in my life has auto skills!

lol, thanks Carmen, we just have to get Karma's car fixed!!!!! Can't Anthony do it? I texted Bryan but no answer.....

You assumption may be correct as if a gas tank goes dry it can suck up what if floating in the tank. also there is coarse sock or filter like devise in the gas tank. However try changing the fuel filters first. Go to a Auto Zone or a Kragen or similar and they will show you where the filter(s) are and what you need to do to replace, tools etc, if necessary. You should be prepared to relieve any fuel pressure in the line as you remove the old filter, so be careful. If that does not work then you have to drop the tank to replace the fuel pump. a pain to do.

My guess would not be the fuel filter at all but the fuel pump. Check the fuel pressure under the hood going to the injectors and make sure it is adequate. Improper pressure will hinder your starting.

I hope your friend knows someone who can work on her car for less than a grip of cash. I think it will be expensive, but my hopes are with her that it can be fixed. Sorry that I couldn't help you more.
