Dog walking...?
Hey guys - I'd like some ideas on this.
I walk two dogs - a small, easy 5-minute dog and a large handful dog I walk for a 1/2 hour. I get paid twice the amount of the small 5-minute dog...the big dog is a big handful, but all bark and no bite. We've tried Gentle Leader and different collars, but nothing seems to work, and I'm tired of trying. Both are very sweet, but walking the large dog just isn't fun anymore; it's become a real chore for me. I've been exploring interests in other activities and it's a pain to schedule this long walk around it. It takes a lot of energy to walk such a large dog - most of which I cannot give after a 6-hour, stressful school day. I really just don't want to walk her anymore. The only problem is her owners are elderly and really like me; they've become rather attached. How should I break it to them? How much notice should I give them? Please help me!

Find a few more qualified dog walkers and contact them. Tell them you can no longer walk the dog and ask if they'd take over. With their OK, give their contact info to the elderly couple so they won't be left high and dry.

Well tell them you can't walk the dogs anymore. ANother idea to try with a large dog is to put the collar and leash on in a normal manner and run the dogleash underneath one of the dogs armpits, and then walk the dog like that... this give you a little more control as well.

Before giving up on this couple, ask if your friends or siblings would be willing to take over the dog walking duties. You can also try talking to other neighbors (and their kids). I'd say try and give the couple some options before you stop walking the dogs.

I think that you should keep trying and maybe try some new methods because they just want the best for their pup, and they probably feel bad about being too old to go for a walk with him, and so I would just stick with it for the elderly people and the dog's sake.

Read Cesar Millan's book, "Be the Pack Leader". There are some really great tips on how to walk a dog-not the dog walking you!
