Quick question???
For the last few times I have went to start my car after having it sit for a few hours or more, it has been very hard to start. When I go to turn the key, it cranks like the battery is dead for a few seconds, then starts up as normal. Anyone with an idea of what is going on. I own a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with approx. 77,000 miles on it. I live in New Jersey and the weather is starting to get cold.

my old girlfriend used to have the same problem on a 2004 sport trac...after she got a new battery it didnt do that anymore. After a while the only way to get going is getting a jump and I got tired of doing that everyday!!

First check the battery to see that it is holding a charge then check the power draw from the starter. Check the alternator to see that it is putting out enough to charge the battery while the car is running. Have the solenoid checked as well. Everything works together. Get your car in tip top shape now before the nasty weather comes around. It's going to be a really harsh winter. You don't want to be stuck in the snow. Make sure you have flares and other survival gear tucked away in the trunk.
PS: Getting a new battery doesn't necessarily diagnose the problem because the battery is new. The only purpose the battery serves in a car is to kick off the starter after that the alternator takes over and runs everything on the car while sending a trickle charge back to the battery to keep it charged. When the alternator is not putting out enough the car starts to borrow power from the battery which little by little runs it down. When you use headlights, wipers, radio etc. all at the same time that is when the most demand is being made on the alternator.

It's probably the battery. I had a 2001 Explorer that started doing that when the OEM battery got to be about 5 years old. I replaced the battery and the problem disappeared.

Quick answer.. battery is probably starting to get low on available amperage to turn the starter motor and the slow turn you get before it gets a good speed going to finally start it....
Check the battery.. if questionable..change it ..I recommend going with a bigger battery such as a 850cca battery personally
Check the terminals of the battery for any breakage....
after that.. check wires going to the starter and the starter but I'm thinking battery is finally outlived it's useful life.

its running a little hot per chance
your air filter may need servicing causing it to flood when you shut it down excess gas in chambers is like a siezed engine till it starts
or you have a timing issue 77,000 miles if that a belt type timing its time to change that if its a v8 motor or any of the what i call old style motor s as in not in tthe rig crossways it probably has a chain not belt so it would be ok at 77,000

Have the starter checked. About any auto parts store will do it for you free. It sounds like the started is dragging.

Check engine timing- timing belt if still - - reading normal. Well you have to go for a shop of course. No worry it will cost you only a few bucks.

could just be the battery connections are corroded..that or the battery is getting weak
