Is it a mistake to put an admin assistant in...?
The company I work for is a small residential contractor firm.
My boss just hired a new admin assistant to answer the phone which doesn't ring very much and handling city permits. Rumor has it that the new admin will also be IT and programmer instead of my boss (also the office manager and head of the design dept in addition to IT/programming). There is no formal IT/programming department.
My co-workers and I REALLY don't like this because this new "secretary" has NO formal IT/programming college level education or related work experience. In fact the boss chose this person based on document scanning work exp, a high school programming class, and PC repair for computer at home.
My coworkers and I can't help but feel that the boss is making a HUGE mistake if he has the new admin do IT/programming.
Do you guys/gals.. ...agree? ...disagree? ...and why?
Also...why would the boss would give the admin IT/programming duties?

Agree 100%.
The boss here did the same damn thing as your boss. He hired an uneducated dimwit secretary to do the normal secretary stuff and IT/programming. We all questioned him. She had no training or experience for IT/programming. Boss' response: "She showed potential during the interview." Ok fine. What happened: She sucked. Every upgrade she did caused more and more problems. She couldn't even figure how to install the RAM memory! The boss finally stopped her from doing IT/programming. From then on the boss decided to just outsource all IT/programming issues. It's been smooth sailing ever since.
I suggest that you and your colleagues price outsourcing IT/programming with several different providers and provide that vs the cost of a permanent admin. That might be enough to stop the boss from allowing this new hire to do IT/programming.

I think your boss is putting the company in harm's way to save a few bucks. If your boss needs an IT person or programmer on occassion he should hire a service when its needed. IMO, someone without the proper education and certification has no business doing IT/programming work.

Hes the boss,,maybe he knows more about her and the needs of the company than you guys do. Just concentrate on the jobs you have and let him do his. If his decisions don't work out,,he will change them or someone will change it for him. Creates to much worry and drama to worry about all the un-necessary stuff thats going on around us. We don't always know everything that the other person does who is using the info to make there decisions based on.

He is probably doing it to save the company money. He would have to pay a good salary to and IT/programming professional. He probably wants an entry level person so he can save money.
