VERTICAL Double Vision? SERIOUS answers, ONLY, please!?

When we think of "double vision" we think of two images side-by-side. However, back around mid-summer, my boyfriend began to experience occasional incidents of VERTICAL double vision - one image ABOVE the other! The incidents were sporadic and short-lived at first, but have become more frequent and longer-lasting with the passage of time.

In Late August, his vision got "stuck" that way for a couple of days, then turned loose and went back to intermittent again.

The eye doctors he has seen at the VA Hospital are totally bewildered and have NO idea what it is or what to do about it.

He thinks it is a side effect from his medications, but the doctors keep denying that - even though it lessens if he cuts back on his prostate meds and one of his inhalers. However, both of these meds are vital to him, so he cannot cut them out entirely.

Has anyone else ever encountered this?

Does anyone know what it is and what we can do about it?

Update:

They did a CAT scan (or maybe it was a partial MRI) for neurological related problems and said there were none - allwas normal. I don't know if the Dr. who ordered that and then read/interpreted the results was a neurologist or not - he might have been..

I don't know if this could the same as your BF but I had that happen several times it's called Optic Neuritis. It would come and go. I was finally diagnosed with MS last year. Optic Neuritis is a symptom of MS.

    Optic Neuritis Symptoms and Information:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optic_neuritis

You can find out more about optic neuritis and MS here:

    http://www.nationalmssociety.org/site/PageServer?p...

Previous to being diagnosed I had CAT scans. They cannot diagnose MS. Only a spinal tap or MRI can diagnose MS. I would ask for a referral to a neurologist, who can give the best direction for next step.

Please, I didn't tell you this stuff to scare you. MS is not a death sentence. You wouldn't even know that most of the people that I know who have it do. Only the most severe cases are wheelchair bound. Go to the website for the National MS Society and see if he has any other of the common MS symptoms. MS is a weird disease and it is quite different in each person effected.

Additional info.....my optic neuritis got worse over time. The first time it was only a few days, when I finally got diagnosed it lasted 3 months!

Tell your BF to cover one eye. This will help him be at least functional.

    Hi,

I am sorry to here of your boyfriend's vision problems.

I experienced something similar but, the vision began to scroll like it would on an old TV set that had vertical hold.

I have relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. I am NOT saying this is what may be causing his vision problems.

It would be a good idea if he was seen by a neurologist. That would be my next step. Always get second opinions. Doctors make mistakes as well.

Take care and best of luck,

    Christine
