I first fell in love with Pit Bulls because I saw so many abused pit bulls come into the animal shelter where I was volunteering. They would come in bleeding and broken, and obviously in pain, but they still had enough energy to wag their tail, and lick your cheek. I love the way they look, I like their size, and build. I love their energy level. I can take my dog on a long walk every day, and we have a long romp in the back yard. But when we come in the house she is calm, and just wants to lay by us. I like that they are extremely friendly with people. I can take my dog with me anywhere, because she get along so well with everyone. I also like her goofy personality. She can Always make me laugh. And if I am having a bad day, she is there to cheer me up. And she is very easy to train. She is smart, and she picks things up very quickly. Pit Bulls have a Huge drive to please their owners, and will do just about anything for them. Pit Bulls are very people oriented, it doesn't matter what they are doing, just as long as they are around people. Some Pit Bulls can be aggressive toward other dogs, but through selective breeding and early socialization this can be reduced or eliminated. My pit bull loves to play with other dogs.

If you are considering adopting a pit bull, do a lot of research on the breed, and learn how to raise them to be well behaved canine citizens. You will also want to meet a lot of different Pit Bulls so you can get a feel for their personality. And the term 'pit bull' refers to a few different breeds, but mainly the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I have an American Pit Bull Terrier.

I do not own a Pit, but I worked for a no-kill shelter for quite awhile when growing up and did quite a bit of training. I honestly believe the temperment of the Pit Bull is a direct correlation to the training and treatment it receives from the owner.

Unfortunately, the Pit Bull is largely treated as a status symbol as opposed to a dog or pet. Alot of people that should NOT be allowed within 50 feet of a dog chose to own the Pit Bull because they think it makes them look tough to have one. Not because they love the dog or breed. The end result is an unruly, uncontrollable, and often times abused and vicious animal that has no respect for people. The Pit Bull is a very strong animal, and not respecting people as it's alpha certainly leads to trouble.

It is important to remember that any dog that is treated badly is a dangerous dog. The jaw strength of a Pit Bull is much greater than alot of other dogs, making them notorious when they attack because it does that much more damage.

The media contributes to the plight of the Pit Bull, also. Golden Retrievers used to have the most bites per year of any breed (not sure if that is still current information or not), but how many Golden bites do you hear about in the news? Or any other breed, for that matter? You don't, unless the attack was especially severe. But when a Pit Bull bites - even if by bites it is a very mild one - it is one of the top news story that evening.

My favorite dogs to work with when they came in to the no-kill shelter were our Pit Bulls and Pit mixes - as a whole, in my experience they are easy to train, attentive dogs. It is a shame they do not get the respect or love they deserve. A little bit of time and love in a Pit Bull leads to a wonderful dog.

What a thought provoking question! Honestly? No. Not once. Not even. Know why? Because she is exercised, disciplined and loved. She is very socialized with people and other animals outside our home. I have watched her 'fight' with my 6 year old Dachshund. Out of all my dogs he is the only one that challenges. But there is never any blood. She could have killed him dozen of times if she had it in her. My 17 lb Shih Tzu mix can alpha roll her. She absolutely loves people. She would go with anyone. She is crazy for kids and wiggles all over when she sees a kid. She wiggles all over when she sees the cats. No, I have no doubt in my mind this American Pit Bull Terrier that I adopted will ever become another 'statistic'. I would bet my life on it. And I forgot to say just one last thing. They are the most gorgeous dogs I have ever seen. I love the APBT.

I like pit bulls because they are one of the most loyal breeds I have met. Our pit bull is my 9yo best friend. She sleeps in her bed at night and when she is walking home from school she waits at the corner of our fence. Our pit is like Lassie. She is good with our cats too. We just brought a kitten home and she has no problem with him. She's good with other dogs in our home and when we go places and on walks. Every pit bull I have met have had the same temperament except for the cat thing. I used to not like pit bulls. I have learned that what the media chooses to put out is not what this breed is.

I don't own Pit Bulls, but pretty much all the Pit Bulls I have ever met were just about the sweetest things ever. One that was at the vet's office in the waiting room while Judge was getting some tests done was just so nice and did something that made us all laugh. There were some cans of dog food on the counter. She put her paws up on the opposite side, saw the food, then edged along while she was still up there to get to the food instead of just dropping down and walking to it! It just looked so adorable.

Then my parents' friends came over once with a new puppy which I was pretty sure was a Pit Bull/German Shepherd cross. She was so nice and playful. I loved her.

I am not a pit bull owner but my aunt is and this is what she said:

They got it initially because they wanted a tough dog... nothing wimpy. They fell in love because he was loyal and playful, and was very social with everyone who came to the house, but they still felt like he would protect them if necessary.

We have a mix, 3/4 Amer. Pit & 1/4 Choco. Lab. We still call her "Puppy".

The breeder gave her to my son; said she was the runt of litter of 13, wouldn't make a good hog hunter and, if he couldn't take her, he would have to put her down. All of her sibling are dead. My son brought her home without our permission!!

She's 7 years old, weighs 80 lbs and the 2nd smartest dog we've ever had. Our smartest was a shep./wolf mix.

She has a wonderful disposition and loves kids. She enjoys swimming with the kids next door, walking to the mail box and riding in the my husband's bass boat. She truly believes that the bed of my husband's pick-up belongs to her; will sit in it for no apparent reason or however long it takes to mow the yard.

When she was 2, she saved my life, the 1st time. A wild dog tried to attack me, in my back yard. It was her first and only fight. The first 2x's she grabbed him by the throat, while they both were in the air, and shook him all the way to the ground, only to have him get loose from her grip; and he still tried to get to me. On the 3rd attempt, her instincts kicked in to the max. She latch on to his throat and was going for the kill. By that time my husband had reached us, commanded her to let go and she obeyed. At that point, the cur had had enough of that little black b*tch and left rather quickly; and we have not seen him again.

The 2nd time, she refused to allow me to walk into the front yard. Her hackles came up, she produced a low gutteral growl and assumed an attack stance in front of me. The rattler was already in a coil when I finally saw him, about 45 ft. away. We simply went back in the house and waited for the snake to proceed into the woods.

Puppy was easy to house train and she follows voice & hand commmands without hesitation. She spends a great deal of time on our closed-in back porch, where she sleeps on a baby bed mattress, which is on her toddler bed. She has her own bed-room down-stairs.

Properly trained Pits make good pets and have even been used for search and rescue. During the aftermath of the collapse of the World Trade Center, I saw film-footage of one at work!

Everyone who goes into a bank isn't labeled as a bankrobber, so why do some people label all Pits as "bad dogs"? Some of those people are misinformed and some of them are just plain stupid!

Our family and friends know what she is & who she is and none of them are afraid of her.

We love her. I owe her for protecting me. She's a good companion and we will always make sure that she has a good life.

I like all dogs-animals but ferrets.

My parents had a bulldog. New neighbors thought it was a Pitt bull, came to door every few days just to complain about the dog. It's presents in the neighborhood(fenced in though). Not a barker, just the fact that it was there. Cops had to be called. He was gonna shoot if he saw it in our backyard again, he's two doors down. We got rid of the dog to a nice young couple. It was hard but didn't want to chance anything.

Sorry, there's really no point. :)

I like my pit bulls because they are full of personality. They are very intelligent, and I have a lot of respect for the breed. My dogs do not display any of the stereotypes you hear about in the news. They are very sweet dogs who are eager to please. They are very protective of their family, but very friendly to people we present to them.

I also love telling people I have two pit bulls. They are always surprised, because I don't seem like the "type" to have "vicious" dogs. whatever that means, and 2. They know not to come over my house unannounced :o)

Pit bulls are extremely intelligent, and full of character. I have two sisters. They are very affectionate, and playful. They make me laugh. They love people, but are protective of their family.
