Can you have a three way switch with one of them being a dimmer?

    Yes you can have a 3-way switch so long as only one of them is a dimmer. Have them all over my house.

    Your advice so far is correct, however, I would like to add, there are solid state dimmers that allow you to have a dimmer at both ends of the three way,,,,,, sort of. you put one of these at each switch location.

    For one side to act as a dimmer, the other one needs to be in the complete "off" position.

    I have them in my two story sunroom and they do work. My friend IBEW electrician probably is about as crazy about these things as the IBEW contributor on here. :)
