2000 Dodge intrepid with a 2.7 liter.?

that is the worst motor Chrysler ever made. i think jasper has changed the design to make the oil galleys bigger, that's what you need, i don't think Chrysler has ever come up with a fix.i would call jasper and talk to them about it.if your a tech, you can fix it yourself and save some money. alot of people try to rebuild them and i just haven't seen any luck with that. there may be a class action lawsuit coming. i keep hearing whispers about it. so save all your receipts. call the hot line at 1-800-992-1997 and ask. if you go with the Chrysler have him use synthetic oil at 3 to 5 k but i don't advise it. good luck

I'm not aware of an updated Chrysler block for the 2.7L Mitsubishi engine in the 2nd generation (1998+) Intrepid. If you are going to stick with the 2.7L engine, then the Jasper rebuild is the best bet. (It supposedly has some improvements, including larger oil galleries.)

It's also possible to swap in a 3.2L engine, using the same transmission and computer. Just need to change the motor mounts, and all of the parts that are different (the power steering pump and such), along with the 3.2L engine. The computer for the 2.7L engine is supposed to work with the 3.2L engine.

Lots of people have reported problems with "oil sludge" in the 2.7L engine. A chemical breakdown of the oil, forming a semisolid goop, which clogs up the flow of the oil (pickup screen, pump, and galleries), which leads to oil starvation.

Lots of people are blaming it on excessive heat in the engine, due to poor engine design. But I'm more apt to believe that it's oil starvation which is leading to increased friction, which results in excessive heat, engine wear, and which causes a breakdown of the remaining oil. (There's only 5.5 quarts of oil when the sump is full.)

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure that this is a design flaw in the engine. Granted, the oil should not be breaking down and causing formation of sludge, given a properly functioning PCV valve and regular (frequent) oil changes. Quality engine oil should not be breaking down like that.

I'm keeping a close watch on the oil condition in my 2.7L engine (1998 Intrepid with 103,xxx miles). I check the oil level every fill up, I check the oil filler cap for evidence of coolant contamination at every fill up, and change the oil every three months. (Valvoline conventional 5W30)

The engine was poorly constructed so that the oil doesn't circulate the way it should. This leads to engine sludge and blown engines. Good luck. I will never, ever, buy another Dodge product.

everyone is very familiar with those engines they gave a lot of problems,there's no updates for them though,all of them did give problems,similar to the ones your having,i would get him something else to drive that one will cost more to keep running than it is worth,good luck.

that is a good motor only if you keep up on the oil changes.. they tend to sludge up if neglected.. ive seen it afew times..look horrible if you dont religiously change the oil every 3k..expensive short block.. (good luck)

YES IT IS THE WORST MOTOR EVER MADE AND WHEN THIS HAPPENS IT WILL COST YOU A ARM AND A LEG TO REPAIR.

REPLACING IT WITH ANOTHER 2.7 WILL DO NOTHING FOR YOU AND MOST OF MY CUSTOMERS THAT HAD THE 2.7 ENGINES JUST GAVE ME THE VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE PRICE TO REPAIR IT.
