Click Girl shows the typical American ignorance. People who speak in foreign languages don't want to change the langauge of the United States. They simply want the liberty everyone should want: To do whatever they want as long as it doesn't affect another. Me speaking in another language has no negative consequences upon you. Europe has understood this for many generations. Some people speak a multitude of languages, and the native languages seem to continue to be untouched.
The idea to pass a law to make english the official language is simply ignorant. What do they expect to accomplish? Go around walking with a certificate that says english is the official language to everyone who speaks another language? To jail people for speaking another language? The truth it seems that those who are hateful of foreign languages suffer from a deadly disease: Stupidity.
EDiT: Seriously, how much more stupid can this country get that people are ashamed of the fact that they speak another language?

no offense to all the people that immigrated to our country after the revolution but , the united states was founded by primarily English speaking people , and thus so the language should be just that English. If suddenly Mexico or Japan or France had a huge wave of English people immigrate there and then try to change the native language you would probably be very angry about that , would you not ? So why do you want to change the language that our country has had for over 200 years , i think that if you want to hold on To your native culture that is wonderful but you cant expect that we should all start speaking Spanish or Chinese just because you don't want to learn our language. we are not scared of you but without a common language there would be no "opportunity" , if you want to speak you native language at home that's fine , but don't expect us to have mandatory Spanish speaking employees in every place you go.

I think I have to agree with you. You'd think with a country like ours (with its citizens stemming from nearly every ethnicity on the face of the earth) we would be a lot more accepting of those who speak foreign languages. It just baffles me. Plus English isn't even our official language. The U.S.A. has no official language, English is simply used as the de facto language even though there are a ton of people in D.C. trying to get bills passed making English our only national langauge. I don't think that should be done. But if our country did ever decide to have an official language I'd say we should definitley have more than one. English, Spanish, and French would be good in my opinion. But no matter how you look at it, discriminating against those who don't speak English is unacceptable. Just my opinion.

I agree with you 100%. The corporate elitists are getting smarter. While the American public is worried about of Mexicans taking lower paying jobs, the majority of middle class jobs are being outsourced to countries where they speak their own native language and English while they in addition give out so many to visa holders that are in the US already. I think the public should be more concerned with the ones that have these middle class jobs that do speak English.

i do agree with that (except for your use of the wrong form of There, Their, They're....you should've used "they're" but that's for a different time). I also hate it when people speak to me slowly and loudly because im Asian (example: Do....you....under...stand....why...this is?).....they assume i can't speak English even though i tell them i was born in Chicago. but to piss them off, i sometimes speak in a different language (French, Spanish, Cantonese) and then slip back into English. It's funny to see them feel like a jerk.

I agree and i can't stand the sign's that they have out now with that slogan..it's offensive to everyone who can't. I speak 2 languages but am an American who was raised in the house speaking only spanish so you can't blame me for knowing 2 langs. I also am teaching my kids to speak my native language and who ever doesn't like it you know can kiss my @ss!
