Laptop Performance ?
So, I have a gateway laptop that I bought three years ago or so with a centrino (I believe) processor. It has Windows XP.
My problem is this: I use up very, very little of the hard drive with about 400 mp3s and about 500 Word documents. I have no games or any applications downloaded, except Photoshop and Internet Explorer/Mozilla Firefox. But my laptop is performing at a terrible speed and it 'freezes' at least twice a day and I have to turn it off by holding on the power button because I can't click on anything.
Do I buy a new laptop or try to get this one re-formated?

This is most likely a minor problem, you do not need a new computer.
Close down most of the programs you have running on your desktop (antivirus, msn, etc) and see if this helps any. If it doesn't use Ctrl Alt and Del and start deactivating programs that are running and using up a lot of RAM.
If this doesn't work you should try checking to make sure that a virus hasn't found it way onto your machine. Make sure to try several programs.
If neither of the above solve the problem, you may be looking at hard drive failure. Listen to the underside of your machine, does it make odd noises? Mine made a sort of popping noise before it gave out all together. If it's the hard drive will need to back up everythng. If it is a hard drive failure reformatting will do nothing to fix the problem.

No its better to fix your current one as it is less expensive and is it can be fixed.
Many things can be causing this issue. Okay follow these steps.
But if its the hard drive:
Start
All Programs
Acessories
System Tools
Disk Clean Up
Then after running disk clean up.
Start
All Programs
Acessories
System Tools
Disk Defragmenter
Disk Defragmenter puts everything in the hard disk together so it doesnt have to spin and waste time looking for data scattered. Its like this pretend you have a library filled with books and the books are all over the place. If you need to find a book then you have to look through all the books scattered. However if all the books in the library were not scattered and neatly on one shelf then you do not need to move around. This is the same with a hard drive. The library is the hard drive and the books are the data.
So disk defragmenter will make sure ur hard disk will run at optimum speed.

If your computer is still slow.
You might be running too much programs.
When your computer is running amazingly slow..press ctrl+alt+del and then you will get a window and in that click the tab called processes.
See what are all the processes(programs) running if its running too much your laptop is keen to be slow. You can't force yourself to not using all the programs to fix this buy more RAM. Ram is probably the best solution to your problem.
Oh and RAM is just memory that lets you run more programs. www.crucial.com and run the system scanner tool.
Buy more RAM it will fix your computer.
Still slow after doing what i told to the hard drive and getting more RAM? hmm...then your computer is probably overheating..bring to to the repair store they will put in a new fan for maybe less that 40 dollars and then your computer should be good.
Hope all this helps :)

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.
Firstly, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:
1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"
Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs. Check the link to alter your virtual memory spec.
Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed
if you follow the tips.

I did own 4 Notebook PCs: my slowest & first was a Gateway Pentium IV 1.8GHz running XP Pro that I paid like $867 back in Sep 2003. It could never keep pace with my wife's work issued Dell Latitude D600 so I got fed up and spent like $1100 on a superfast Dell E1505 with a T7400 chip, 2 GB memory, 256MB video, 120GB Hard Drive literally "the works." Several months have gone by & though my new Dell is great, truthfully it was an overkill and I could have saved $$ with patience bec later I found the matching Gateway memory on my 2nd try. Check your memory: most laptops only have 2 slots and if you don't have 512MB, 1GB or 2GB total -- first check Crucial Memory bec compatibility is GUARANTEED! 2nd if don't you have a built in Wireless card or WiFi PC card adapter -- Intel Pro built in is tops but Belkin Pre-N and Linksys G with Speedbooster or their expensive N has given me the best WiFi connections. I should mention that I had to reformat the Gateway 30 GB hard drive several times: 1st bec of virus that Technies found thanks to my son playing on-line games, 2nd bec I listen to 2 of my friends who recommended Zone Alarm (worst $35 I spent plus it would never uninstall entirely) I also had some diffculty buying a new original Gateway battery and had to send one back just like the memory, but listen when I sold it a week ago and reformatted the hard drive with XP Pro incl Svc Pack 2, it ran really nice and fast despite only having 512MB memory. I even called the buyer yesterday, and everything is fine with regard to using MS Office 2003 and the internet. Some lessons learned advice before reformatting: (1) Find an external hard drive with USB connection and copy or move your songs and important documents over so you can copy them back after reformatting. (2) If buying a new one: stick with Dell seriously and visit Dell outlet bec I currently have just 3 Dell Notebook PCs: another new Dell Latitude D620 that I bought larger harddrive 100GB and CDRW/DVD, 2 GB memory and better Intel ProSet 3945 WiFi..bec Dell original replacement parts are easier to find and in general cheaper bec larger base compared to all other manufacturers. Also if you run Dell diagostics CD it will do good job identifying problems & shortcomings that require action and maybe replacement. I also got Dell Latitude D800 off of a lease that had 1GB memory and 1.7M Centrino that I reinstalled XP Pro and all windows updates & this baby runs just as fast as my other new Dell D620 and E1505 notebook PCs.
Hope the above info helps, and Best of Luck!
