anyone know how to overcome this PS3 problem without buying a new television?

I bought the 80 gb PS3. I bought the Digital out cable for an HD picture. Now I'm reading that the BLU-RAY discs won't play on anything other than 1080p. My television will only go up to 1080i. On top of that I'll also need the HDMI cable rather than the digital out. I don't mind buying the HDMI cable, but I don't really want to shell out for a new television. I have a sony trinitron from 2003 that has a great HD picture. On the other hand Blu-ray capability was half of the appeal of buying the PS3. Anyone have any ideas or similar experiences?

I have a PS3 80G and "Gone in 60 Seconds" which says it is 1080i/1080p. Because of some static sound that was coming out of my TV (Westinghouse 32" LCD) I had to get rid of my HDMI cable and use the COMPONENT connection from my PS3 to the TV. The blue ray movie plays just fine on it even though my TV is just a 720p. If you're using the COMPONENT connection on your PS3 just make sure you have the video settings to 1080i and 720p checked.

That is not correct your BD will play on a standard TV only not in HD quality. It will most definitely play on any HD tv at the native resolutions of that TV. Here is a question and response from the Blue Ray Committee Web Site's Questions and answers page:

Do I need a new (HD) TV to use Blu-ray Disc?

No. Pre-recorded Blu-ray Disc titles will play on any standard definition TV set, even if the video was encoded in High Definition. Likewise, a Blu-ray Disc recorder can also record standard definition video, for example from regular TV broadcasts or camcorders. A Blu-ray Disc can store around 10 hours of broadcast quality standard definition video on a single-layer disc, or around 20 hours on a dual-layer disc.

Blu-ray movies can play on a 720p/1080i TV. I got Teledega Nights and it works on my 720/1080i TV.
