If you are just learning this, then you probably just need to learn your perfect squares
1^2=1
2^2=4
3^2=9
4^2=16
....etc...
If you know these, then you don't really need to use a calculator, especially if you're trying to find the square root of a non-perfect square like the square root of 40.
However, to find the square root of 40 you would see if 40 has any factors that are perfect squares. And it does, if we refer to our list of perfect squares, then we see that 4 can go into 40 10 times so if we factor we get:
√40=√4x10
we know that 4 is a perfect square so we can take that from under the radical. Leaving us:
2√10 (we had to get the square root of 4)
10 has no perfect square factor so therefore our final answer is:
2√10
I know this is confusing but if you practice enough, you'll get the hang of it.

Use a calculator!
Of course, if they're simple square roots, you can just think about it. For example, if you're trying to find the square root of 16, you know that it's 4 because (4x4=16). The simple ones will be 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, etc. I hope that helps a little.
