o this happened to my bonneville! my problem was the bolts that connected to the battery terminal. one is long and one is short, try replacing them and spray it with some anti corrosion spray.

Most likely this is one of two things.

First off, check your battery cables. I mean REALLY check them. GM cars around this era were very susceptible to battery cable corrosion which can cause a lot of funky insturment panel symptoms, as well as ruin your alternator. If their original, corroded or not I would just replace them anyway. Next I would say that the anternator is shot. My brothers cavalier used to die and he would get the battery dummy light come on, but when we jumped it it would run for a bit until the battery was completely depleted then it would die out again.

*EDIT* After reading about it idiling rough.. make sure that it's not leaking anti freeze on the front of the engine or anywhere in the compartment as that may be a seperate issue like a blown head gasket/ intake manifold gasket.

If that doesn't help, shoot me an email and tell me what all you've done and I'll do my best to help you.

    Good luck!

it could be as simple as the fuel filter, or the fuel pump.

    thats what it sounds like..

    good luck
