What will it take to save North Melbourne from re-locating to the Gold Coast?

Ricky Ponting said he would work with James Brayshaw and Glenn Archer to fight the AFL's push to move the Roos to the Gold Coast.

It seems like The AFL has made up the desicion already, but no-body is really supporting the idea.

As a North Melbourne supporter (before The Crows joined The AFL) and I still have a soft spot for The Kangaroo's, I would not like North to re-locate.

North Melbourne needs to be successful off field as well as on field, if that means raising at least $3 million as part of the fight to reject the AFL's push to the Gold Coast. by all means let it be.

Update:

The challenge for North Melbourne is to convince its fans and footy lovers and The media (Sh*t stirrers) it can survive and thrive in Melbourne.

Update 2:

Yes thats an excellent idea RogueRage, but people will start questioning why. If Fitzroy and South Melbourne didn't get that kind of help from other clubs, why should North be different?

Update 3:

Jemima...Spot on.

The acid test is whether the true supporters will buy a membership ticket.

If they don't, then the so called supporters don't really give a hoot if the Kangas re-locate or not. Put up, or shut up.

Its not going to take anything, AFL is now a business, and from that point of view if the AFL wants a team on the GOLD COAST they will have one. Unfortunately the suburb of "North Melbourne" does not compare with the REGIONAL CITY, that the Gold Coast is in Queeensland . The Gold Coast has one of the worlds great beach's, a million $ tourism industry, a casino, the INDY 500 annually, an Australian Rules team, Southport Sharks, with a million $ or more turnover with what would have to be the Country's best "Aussie Rules"social club complex, horse racing, trotting and greyhound venue' an International Airport at Coolangatta, and some of the Country's great Golf courses. The "suburb" of North Melbourne does not, and never will compare. The only difference is that North Melbourne has an AFL team, The Gold Coast doesn't, but be assurred in time it will. If you stop and think about it, the $ turnover on the Gold Coast, as far as tourism is concerned at least, is probably higher than both Adelaide and Perth, who have 2 AFL teams each. Even a busker would understand he would make more $'s out front "any venue" on the Gold Coast than he would out front a cafe in Errol St North Melbourne. All the AFL and I suspect the North board in reality are doing at the moment is "tidying" their supporters and corporates, for the inevitable, similar to a parent with a kid who doesn't want to "LEAVE" for school, adjusting the clothes, brushing the teeth and shoes , combing the hair, while at the same time saying , you will "love it" all your friends are there, you'll have a great time, and of course you have to GO because today Mum and Dad wont be HOME to look after YOU!

Keep them in Melbourne! If the Gold Coast want a football team - they can create their own. There must be enough interest up there or they would not be trying to move the roos. It's about time there was a proper national competition with teams from all states including Tas and NT and two teams from the larger states - and then put the AFL back to the original VFL. There are too many state teams playing league football already. Behind you all the way Roos! Just don't even think about signing Ben Cousins!!

Of course they should have. They will always be uncompetitive compared to the other melbourne clubs in attracting members. They had a chance to move to the gold coast and attract a whole group of new members in a one city team, and while they might lose some melbourne members the numbers they pick up on the coast in the long term would have been so much more.

honestly i think their rooted if they stay in melbourne. They have no money and have one of the lowest membership counts in the AFL. Melbourne has too many clubs for it to support the Kangaroos. I think it is enevitable and the need to relocate to save the club. The supporters may not initially like the idea but the same thing happened when south melbourne relocated to sydney and that ended up being the correct decision.

You have answered your own question they need to put some bucks in the bank as do a few other clubs.

So roo supporters if you want your club to go to Qld just sit on your hands and wave them goodbye or get out and really support your club and show the AFL the kangaroos can be viable in Melbourne their future is in your hands

With all the matches scheduled for Gold Coast, I think the Roos are going to need a lot of help to keep them here, the good thing is they have started the right way by signing Laidley as coach.

It's the memberships that will help keep the Roos in Victoria.

If the members go up here in Vic for the Kangas then so do the chances of them staying in Vic.

Hopefully a special deal to let them stay in Melbourne for a small profit

Source(s): Personally i think it's very stupid that Kangas are going to move up north, They were Melbourne born like me and they should stay in Melbourne. I think the people who are telling them to go up north can get fucked because the Kangas have the right to stay in Victoria

Why not relocate to Western Sydney ? It's a huge growth corriedor, traditionally League territory, but who knows, with how overly protective mothers are these days and how spoilt and coeardly the kids are, AFL may well work !

    Source(s): It's a weaklings game !
