Songs You're Surprised You Like?
Guess this is akin to 'guilty pleasures' in a way.
Though I'm always one of the 1st here to throw in my 2 cents when people call bands like Green Day or Blink 182 "punk", I have to admit to actually liking a handful of tunes by certain acts.
I remember back around '94 or so when Green Day 1st hit it big, I *really* liked "When I Come Around". (though this was before people started calling them punk) Thought it was a great blend of a punk *inspired* sound & listener-friendly pop.
To my ears, they actually wrote a few tunes that had real balls. "Geek Stink Breath" is a damn good rocker.
"Warning" is one catchy as hell tune, though it's nearly note for note to The Kinks' "Picture Book". (go listen to em back to back & you'll see!)
A couple of summers back, I liked Good Charlotte's "Boys & Girls". THAT song, to me, had the Beach Boys written All over it. Just louder & more revved up.
Think of more as they come to me.
What're some of yours?
Holy jesus, Jakex- you Know I'm The Biggest Rush fan on this mo-fo & I Never knew *you* liked em!
Good for you!

I "accidentally" got into Metallica myself. I wasn't much of a metal listener in the 80s. I'd see all these other kids wearing this demonic looking sh*t on their denim jackets & whatnot & I just assumed it was all just noise set to lyrics about suicide & murder.
Then one night, while flippg thru the radio dial, I heard this CATCHY hard rocking song w/ a rhythm that I'd Never heard before in such a hard tune. Grabbed me right away.
Turned out I caught the middle of the title track of 'Master of Puppets". when the dj said it was Metallica, I flipped! NEVER thought I'd end up liking them.
Never looked back since. :)

When i first discovered Metallica, I was really surprised that I liked them. This was probably the Master of Puppets era. I was much more into urban funk and club music at the time. Now, much more into rock.
I can also tell you the exact moment I became hooked on Led Zepplin in High School, which was a shock for my friends!

Aside from the whole Danity Kane thing, I guess I'm really not surprised by much, musically. My tastes are SO all over the place.
However, I will say that I was a Steely Dan fan for years before I ever even knew it. As dumb as that sounds, I had heard their music for YEARS and had always assumed that they were someone else (specifically, that "Do It Again" was a Santana song), and that I didn't really like Steely Dan.
About five years ago, my (now) hubby, popped in a Steely Dan CD while we were on a road trip, and I went along with it to humor him. I was shocked to leanr that I has been a fan for years and didn't know it!

I love Coldplay and with My utter disdain and distaste for modern rock music taken into account, that shocks Me right there.
My three most listened to genres are Classic Metal, Rock and Prog. But I am not a big ironbound genre follower, I listen to a little of everything except Opera and R&B.
Examples of songs that I like but that don't fit
Foggy Mountain Breakdown-Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs
Come On In My Kitchen-Robert Johnson
Rumble-Link Wray
Natural Born Killaz-Dr Dre & Ice Cube
Rose Colored Glasses-Earl Thomas Conley
And I love a ton of Classical Music as well

Following the recommendations of Prof. Anger and lovnrckets, I recently got the Jurassic 5 EP. I pretty much grew up listening exclusively to rock, and I've never given rap/hip-hop the time of day, so I was really surprised to find that I quite liked it. I still don't think I'll be rushing out to but the latest offering from Fiddy and his ilk, but I'm starting to realise that maybe not all rap is bad.

I guess when I was younger I shocked myself when I got into rock. When I was 11, all I would listen to was classical music, I would have Stravinsky, Handel and Bach on constant repeat and I never strayed away from classical for a whole year. Then I somehow stumbled upon Tom Petty and it was so different from what I would normally listen to at the time but I loved it (and it also led me to the rest of what I listen to).
And also Journey, I discovered them pretty late into listening to rock and I always just thought they were the band that sang "Any way You Want It" and thought they were just another bad one hit wonder band (*cough cough* Poison) so I was surprised when I loved them.

Green Day is soo cool! =)
they actually dont care about what other people say they have the balls to actually tell people off in thier songs.
But honestly I would have to say listening to some old backstreet boys songs and some 80's songs really surprised me when I found out I like them =)

I think The Beatles were the biggest shock to me. I never disliked them, but I never thought I would appreciate them as much as I did when I started listening to them in high school. Hearing the simple beauty of "Mother Nature's Son" just one time was all I needed.
