    Hello dear!

    Great question!

    1. You ask Orthodoxy not Christianity! Thus, the christian crimes against the Greeks (almost 20 million Greeks were executed for not converting to Christianity)

    2. Orthodoxy started around the 9th - 10th century, by involving a lot of Greek issues in Christianity

    3. Krypho Scholeio was an invention of the Church, some 130 years ago. Frequent lies become truth! There were many schools during the Ottoman empire. Let us check where the people were studying during that period! There were more schools then than some decades ago. ...

    4. Euvaggelismos and revolution, no connection. By royal decree (Vasiliko Diatagma) in 1840s, King Otto decided to celebrate the beginning of the revolution on the same day as Evaggelismos!

    5. More than 30% of National Bank of Greece is owned by the Greek Church.

    6. More than half of the land of Greece belongs to the Greek Church and monasteries.

    7. They get lots of money from the state and pay no property taxes, while we do!

    8. They get involved in politics and results

    9. They disturb progress, by opposing to evolution, education, research, freedom of speach, etc.

    10. ...

You can imagine, Greece was a state about a century before Italy was and see the difference!

Greece was a state before most of the known states were formed and we are last in education, research, progress, finances, etc.!

Thus: Christianity plays a significant role in Greek history, like the brakes in the cars!

Any dogmas including that of Christianity and various political "isms" as well, have been designed to control the masses. And control they do. Orthodoxy, being a bit more "human" if one can call it that, was not as restrictive and absolute as Catholicism. Unquestionably it has had its influence and effects on Greeks. Sadly, Greece did not have Enlightenment, the 18th Century European movement which helped to liberate thought, so it is still suffering from medieval concepts to a certain extent. Having said that, I must add that the modern Greeks' attitude toward religion, generally reflects that of the ancients. They do not allow it to interfere too much with life an living.

I don't know the meaning of the word "sunufasmenh", and krufo sxolleio and also what is "euaggelismou". Obviously this question is not open for the English speakers. Anyway I would like to add that the Roman Emperor Constantine (born in Naissus, today's Nis, Serbia), put an end of persecution of the Christians in Europe.

During Ottoman times, the Orthodox church was the institution that gathered all Greek speaking Orthodox people. That is no surprise, because the Apostolic? Church did the same for Armenians, the havra for Jews. And the center of a Muslim neighborhood was the mosque.

That was the organization style of the Ottomans.

So, yes, the Orthodox church is what made Greeks today. Without it, most probably Greeks would turn to other religions or sects and forget their language, but I can't say anything about TODAY's church. I only guess that they enjoy liberties and finances they never had under Ottoman rule. Ruling one in many ethnicities is one thing, ruling a whole nation is completely another.

The role of the church is based on the work of a few enlightened people of the clergy who did their best to uphold the faith and the education of the people, in their time.

I believe, then, like now, the very few that kept to their role were taken advantage of the rest who kept to their riches and their comfort. That is the usual story even on more recent times when some were studying while the people suffered.

How do you think there were only one Samouil in Arkadi or one Papaflessas and a very few others that upheld the honour of the clergy, against the hundreds of priests who did nothing or very little if any?

Anyway the people that started the revolution knew that the help of the church was needed in order to boost the moral of the fighters and they tried to collaborate the clergy in the effort. Besides the triptych Homeland(Patris), Religion, Family has repeatedly used and abused. But mostly abused.

When religion was separating Greeks to two categories, to us and them, even as recently as the id campaign, that was an act of History that the historian of the future will put down unless he too finds himself been crowded on a quay.
