Just relax. First of all make sure you have a plan and all of the materials to follow through with this plan.

Introduce yourself and explain why you are becoming their teacher in this part of the school year. Also explain how your class will run. 1. What the daily routine will be. It is very very important to have a daily routine that you follow religiously. 2. How they are going to be graded. Very important to students.

    3. What your rules are and consequences for breaking the rules.

I would then give them a test. YES, DO IT. It is a test to see where they are in terms of what you need to teach them. You can determine where the strengths and weakness are. Make the test include questions and/or essays to cover what your course covers.

So after the basic intro and whatnot, give the test and if the class is only an hour, you are set. If it is longer teach a small lesson after giving the test.

Good luck, I have been where you are.

Oh - and one last thing, don't listen to that first post from "Hattie" something. It is people like her that have ruined the educations system. I bet she is the type to go into her kid's school and complain that Jr has a D or F. She has no clue what it is like to teach and let me tell you one thing - experience makes you a good teacher not any type of educationl There are all of these "educated" PhDs that teach seminars on how to teach and they are the worst teachers on the planet.

Your best bet would be to ask your fellow teachers at the school about their structure and class format. The students you will be teaching are used to those teachers' styles and would adjust easily to yours if you matched theirs.

Second, at that school, find a partner- or mentor-teacher who can help you, answer your questions, observe you and give suggestions, etc.

Third, treat your students how you would treat any stranger you are meeting for the first time. Give them respect and explain what you want them to do. Remember that it's your classroom and no one can take your authority away from you; you can only give it away.

Have a structured lesson plan and more instructional activities than you need for the time (some things are completed more quickly than you realize). Use all of the resources available to you (teacher books, etc.) to help you formulate your lessons. Depending upon the age group, student interaction will vary.

Continue to be a student yourself. If you're not, enroll in a teacher preparation program at a local college. That will help you with many of your questions and concerns.

Finally, model for the students the kind of behavior and work that you expect. (For example, learn how to use capitals and how to spell).

    Good luck.

Stand at the door and welcome them as they come in.

Then, introduce yourself and have a presentation of what you will be doing and what you expect from them. Place the burden on them, not you. Tell them your discipline policy and stick to it - they will test you, don't be surprised.

With your lessons, be relevant. Apply whatever it is to their lives. If you are teaching Math use pizza slices, if it is an essay tell about a trip they took to the beach, etc. They are much more engaged that way.

And overprepare...put in the time each day to have your whole day mapped out with extra material ready if needed. You will be grateful and they will know that you are organized.

Talk alot about attitude and success.

Find a mentor - someone to show you the ropes.

i envy u. i was actually going to b a teacher at one time, but because of relationship trouble, i backed out. i used to thing the same thing to myself tho, "HOW was i going to do this?" just remember, ur the teacher. introduce yourself, use the first week to familiarize yourself with ur students, the school, and the routine. TALK to ur fellow teachers. they have ALL been where YOU r now. get their advice. my only admonishment to u is that u waited til now, the day before u actually start, to think about this. I could pull it off without preparation, but that is ME. i hope for ur sake that u r able to as well. GOOD LUCK

also, when u have time, let me know sum things, like grade ur teaching and where :-)

Why would a reasonable person want to become a teacher nowadays?

Where I come from teachers are beaten up by their students.
