Honing Oil?

Have not heard the term in years.

It is a very fine oil that you could buy in hardware stores when people actually used honing stones.

If you really want it ,it is available online at specialty woodworking sites.

Mineral spirits w/ a few drops of mineral oil is close.

I just use kerosene.

For sharping knives, what type of oil is it? I am looking to sharpen some knives, and local wal mart does not carry the oil, is there a substitute I can use?

I mix Mineral Oil and Kerosene - 50-50 mix

I don't worry about the scent and just use baby oil on my oil stone; BUT, for general sharpening, I use a whetstone and water.

What aabout diesel fuel? I use that when honing cylinder bores in an engine block with satisfactory results.

True Value, Ace, Do it Best, Sears carries the oil.,but if you still can't find any use mineral oil.

go to a little local hardware store, or even a Home Depot, etc.

They will have it. Ask someone, preferably an employee over the age of 50, and they will know exactly what you need and where it is.

most any sporting goods store that sells hunting stuff will have it. otherwise, any light duty oil should work (three in one, or other kind of household oil). the oil is used to float the small particles of metal from the knife blade, so they don't plug up the wet-stone.
