First, CLIP YOUR BIRD'S WINGS. If you don't know how to do it yourself, take it to a veterinarian to have it done. It's extremely hard to finger-tame a bird that knows it can get away from you by flying.

Take them into another room away from the cage, so they can't even see it. Their cage is their santuary and as long as they have the choice, they'll choose the cage over you until they get accustomed to you handling them.

Get small "foot-toys" -- that is, something your bird can hold in his/her foot.

Why do you want to breed your parakeets? If they lay eggs and have babies, you will not be able to take them out and play with them while they are sitting on the eggs and feeding the babies.

If they are flying back to their cage, it is because that is where they are most comfortable. Make their time out of the cage enjoyable. Let them sit on your finger and give them a snack - hold a millet spray and let them nibble on it. Get them a tabletop play gym and put it away from the cage area. Get them some toys that they can play with outside of the cage, not things that have to hang on the cage. Some birds like the little plastic balls that have bells inside.

Make sure when you have your parakeets out, you do not allow other animals or young children in the same room - these could scare your birds. Make sure that the room you are in is safe for your birds.

Here is a great website for parakeet toys, play gyms and information: http://www.lisashea.com/petinfo/articles/bird_toys...

Try DrsFosterSmith.com for lots of toys as well as other items for your birds.

if you do not know how to breed your birds , then don't! There is nothing more tragic than seeing a lovely brace of baby birds die because you didn't know how to help them, take care of them ,or give them what was needed! It is NOT easy or simple to breed birds successfully. PLEASE do a LOT of research before you try.

Your birds fly back to their cage because they feel safe there. It is their HOME! This is natural. You are not hurting them. If you want them to be more loving and wish to spend more time with you, then you need to establish trust with them and make them feel more secure. This is usually accomplished by spending at least 1 to 2 hours every day of their lives talking to the birds and interacting with them. There is no short cut to this. It takes lots of time and patience.

I can direct you to a Yahoo group of loving bird owners with a large library of articles on bird behavior, diets, breeding, health, training and more. just E-mail me if you are interested.

    Good luck

Our birds love Q-tips, chinese finger traps, and anything else they can chew on. (that's safe.....)

Budgies are difficult to tame and handle. The more you work with them, the easier it gets, but they seem to 'forget easily.' My husband had ours to the point where he could walk with them to the store on his shoulders. But- after a few months of not working with them they go back to their old ways. You may want to try a small play-stand or something that feels like a safe-haven out of the cage.

Also- Beware of mirrors.......They start to see the 'bird in the mirror' as a mate and will not seek human companionship.

well this wont train your birds to do tricks or anything but they LOVE mirrors. they think its another bird in the cage with them.
