well, there is an effect.....a big oil tanker displaces that is moves asides a volume of water that is, say, 1000 by 250 by 40 feet.

Say there are 5,000 ships that size out there.

multiply all that out to get the amount of cubic feet of water displaced by 5,000 ships.

Now, the North Atlantic is 3,000 miles wide by 4,000 miles long by average 2 miles deep.

Multiply that in feet to get the cubic of the North Atlantic.

See what a small ......really small....fraction the ships make?

To think of it another way..........60% of Earth is ocean, averaging 3 miles deep. THATS A LOT OF WATER!

You're right that they must have an effect. However the effect is so small it's not measuarble (by any means) and is therefore completely insignificant.

You should be aware that there is no such thing as "sea level", there is only a MEAN sea level. A low pressure area can suck up the surface of the sea for hundreds of miles around by several inches, whilst a high pressure area can depress the sea level as much. Massive areas of dense rocks in the Earth's crust can pull the sea level down by many feet for thousands of miles around due to their extra gravity. The Sun and Moon of course pull the surface all of the seas on one side of the world up by many tens of feet (and thus they go down on the other side) all the time - that's what tides are.

You're right to be concerned about sea levels rising worldwide, but big ships really have NO effect that's worth talking about.

The total volume of world ocean is much much bigger than displacement values for all these monster looking heavy ships. Its like a David and Goliath.

    LOL!! watcha smokin!?!?

there arent enough ships in the world to make that much difference!!

Ships displacements are tiny drops of water compared to the whole Ocean
