When a subject is recruited for a psychological study, sometimes they are not told what the study is really investigating. This is intentional, to ensure that the subjects are giving honest answers. However, after reading the materials or going through the study, some subjects start to figure out what the study is about (or they believe that they know what the study is about). They then try to fit their answers and behavior to fit what they believe the researcher's hypothesis is. These are demand characteristics.
