Why do parents ask for "cute" baby names?
I often come to this Y!A section, because I like to see what people call their kids these days and I've noted that often people as for "cute" baby names. Does that mean they are asking for nicknames? According to me a baby is cute, but not its name. He/She has to live with that name for the rest of his/her life. (Just curious, don't mean to offend anybody)

you know I totally agree with you. I know someone who named their daughter Belladona.. because she thought it was cute. Then their was someone else who named their kid Scout. I like the name Scout but for a full grown adult that just seems like a silly name..

whats your name daydreamer?
yeah parents need to see that people have to live with the names they are given for their whole life... including the spelling of it, the nicknames, the connotations. some names are good all through life - eg cute as a child, nice as a teen and respectable as an adult, like Madeleine or similar names that can be shortened, etc.
Cute names are fine, but just imagine putting that name on a resume, or having a teacher mispronounce it in every class, or having to spell it everytime you have to tell someone your name.
i completely agree with you

I think a lot of parents don't think it through...sure Kylei is cute for an impish little four year-old girl, but how does Kylei sound as your heart surgeon, or your senator?
Plus, "unique" spellings are terrible, because they don't make your child unique. They will still end up being Mikaiyla S. because said aloud, it is the same name all the other kids have. Plus, they will always have to spell it out and they will never be able to find anything with their name on it. Not to mention it makes the parents look uneducated.

Because unfortunately, many parents don't consider that very fact. Yes, a baby is "cute," but that doesn't mean he or she will appreciate an equally adorable, childish moniker when they're 38. LOL Oddly enough, little babies tend to grow into big, strapping adults. ;)
So I completely agree. Formal names should not be "cute" ... that's what nicknames are for.

I agree with you. Some people don't really think about their babies being adults one day. A baby is cute so they want cute names to match I guess. I am guilty of doing this, asking for cute names, but I do think about how it would affect them when they get older. My parents sure did not do that for me.
