Actually, it's more eco-friendly to have a real tree believe it or not. The farms they get them from usually have poor soil anyway, aren't home to animals, they replant, and it's not doing any harm to the ozone. Fake trees are not biodegradable. But I guess, if you want a real tree and to be totally eco-friendly, get a potted christmas tree! I knew one kid who decorated the tree outside too. lol.

Real! You really aren't hurting a thing by using a real tree. 98% of real Christmas Trees are grown on farms. They are grown solely for your use at Christmas. If there wasn't a market for them, the land would be used for something else, so it isn't like you are taking trees away that would have grown up to be big.
I'd go with a Fir. Soft needles, good needle retention (they won't lose their needles after 2 weeks). Balsam Fir, Fraser Fir, and White Fir (aka Concolor) are the ones to look for. Another options might be a Scotch Pine -- very nice, strong branches for hanging ornaments, but you might find the needles a bit too prickly.
I've actually rated my favorite varieties of Christmas Trees here (http://www.theweekendarborist.com)./ Check it out and you'll learn more than I could write here.
Happy Holidays! Enjoy your tree!

Real for me! I'm a Christmas tree grower, and I love seeing all the support for Real Christmas Trees! I truly hope the trend towards fake trees slows soon. When people stop buying Real trees, I'll have to stop growing them and sell my farm to a developer...then where would I grow these beautiful evergreens that are so great for the environment?
For my personal choice, the type of tree I use is Concolor Fir. The needles are soft, they smell like citrus when you rub against them, and it lasts forever! I have very few needles to clean up by the time I take it down.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I love the look and smell of real trees, but we have a fake tree because my son was hyperactive and wouldn't leave our tree alone, and it ended up shedding all its' needles within a couple of days!
After that, I bought a fake tree, which has survived every Christmas, despite being pulled over countless times, climbed, etc.
Also, unless like you, I could plant more trees, I would feel too bad about having one!

I would love one year to have a real tree, but we put our tree up so early the day after halloween to be exact that we wouldnt be able to have a real tree without it being nothing but wood by the time christmas came around... I love our fake one too it is nice and full and i dont have to worry about it catching fire while we leave it lit over night for christmas eve and christmas day...

A fake Christmas Tree would be my choice. It can be used year after year. If you want scent you can just buy it. Also it conserves trees. Did you know that ONE tree provides enough oxygen for a family of 4 for ONE year. Think about that. The rain forest is coming down and trees will become more and more important.

I love real christmas trees. They have a wonderful smell. BUT if do not want a messy room then you should go for the fake ones.

Stupid hippies, get a life!
For every person I see who rants about saving trees and using a fake one, I will cut down two!
Christmas isn't the same without a real tree!

REAL. I love the smell!
But make sure it's from a place that replants trees to compensate for those cut down (like a regular Christmas tree farm).
