- Tschuldigung. (If you were in a hurry.)

- Entschuldigung für meine Verspätung.

Do never say or write the translations word-by-word:

Ich bin entschuldigung für die Verspätung.

I mean, everyone will know what you mean but its not very good.

Part of the problem is that what you would say depends on why you would say it. If you’re apologizing that you are late (to an appointment, dinner, etc.)

Es tut mir leid, dass ich mich verspaetet habe.

Verzeihen Sie bitte die Verspätung (formal only)

If you’re apologizing that something (a report, a letter) is late

Ich entschuldige mich für die Verspätung.

Entschuldigen Sie bitte die Verspätung. (formal only)

Verzeihen Sie bitte die Verspätung. (formal only)

“Formal only” means that you would use this with people who are not close friends—a business contact, a teacher…

Don't be misled by those many stupid and wrong translations here. The real translation is:

Es tut mir Leid, dass ich mich verspätet habe.

(I'm half German so I should know about it...)

There are different posibilities

Entschuldigen Sie die Verspätung

Es tut mir leid für die Verspätung

Verzeihen Sie die Verspätung

Ich entschuldige mich fuer die Verspaetung.

or

Es tut mir leid, dass ich mich verspaetet habe.

or

to close friends:

'tschuldigung, bin ein bisschen spaet.

Ich bin für verzögere traurig

or

Es tut mir leid für verzögert

leider hatte ich keine kerzen mehr. ich hoffe, meine nase tut's auch.
