1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4x4 -6?

Has anybody had to replace the antenna on this model. It looks like a detailed job in having to go thru the wheel well and then removing inside side panel. I tried to replace the antenna mast but no improved results. The radio picks up local stations but reception not even. Is it possible that the cause is the radio and not the antenna?? Help!!!

    If the antenna is not snapped off then it has to be the radio.
