Ford explorer Idle air control valve question?
I have a 1999 ford explorer sport v6 and my idle air control valve is starting to bite the dust. It will sometimes crank and as soon as you let off the gas it will choke and die. I was told by a ford serivce manager that it is sticking and isnt much of a problem but I was not told how to unstick it or wether or not it is a culprit to my horrible gas mileage (10-mpg). Please help and thanks in advance
I pirced a new one and it was over 130 bucks! I also removed and cleaned but it didn't change anything. Should I just resume pushing this hunk of junk over a cliff?

MPG is not related with IAC,it only work on idle,,
but will create the symptom you mention,,,if its sticking on close position,,,,,if sticking open you will have a high and a rolling (high and low ) idle
remove and spray clean with WD40,,but not quaranted to fix it
too much vacuum leak will have the same symptom,,
EGR stuck open same too,,
too much gas milage ,,when was the last time you have a tune up,,

You could go with an aftermarket IAC, from advanced auto, or auto zone....IAC's can be cleaned out, however, doesn't guarantee that the IAC motor inside is going to perform any better. It takes less than 5 minutes to change one out, and can be very inexpensive. I'd have it replaced!
You poor gas mileage could be due to a bad fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel filter or clogged injectors. I'd start there, have a fuel induction service performed, drive it a couple hundred miles afterwards, if performance doesn't improve, have a fuel pressure test conducted to determine the result of the concern.

since you did not mention it, i am assuming the check engine light is not on. iac problems are very common on these. more oftern then not they do not set any codes. does the problem occur more on cold start-up? this is another indicator of a sticking iac. one thing you could try to verify a bad iac is this - raise the hood before you start the car and have a small hammer handy. start the vehicle and while the engine is stumbling, TAP on the iac motor with the hammer. if this alters the engine running, the iac is definitely bad. this is generally effective, but even this sometimes does not work...the iac is relatively inexpensive and easy to replace, so your best bet may be "replace with a known good component"...good luck
