Sadly we have a situation where the Conservatives were so successful for a generation that Labour realised their ideology would never again see them elected.
What happened then was the Labour party decided it would have to change its ideology to match that of the electorate, and only then would they have a chance of being elected.
This has, to give it its due, been a spectacularly successful policy for Labour: Find out what the electorate want to hear, and tell them that. The difficulty is, what the electorate wanted to hear was Conservative policies.
So in the late 90s, and ever since, we have had two main parties, both advocating approximately the same policy set, because one believes in it, and the other knows it needs it to be elected. We have, since then, elected governments not for their ideology, but for their managerial competence.
But it doesn't give the voters much choice, which is one of the reasons behind the low turnouts at elections.
What we used to have, and what we need again is not parties who make policy by asking focus groups what they think, but parties who know what they believe in, know how they think they can achieve a society that fits their ideals and then
--- go out and argue their case --- !
I want political parties that advocate their views and try to persuade the electorate that they are right. I want genuine choice. I fear under our current electoral system we will never have it.

It is an amazing feat of social science, i am sickened by the audacity but impressed at the same time.
