What do you think of the name Gerald Giovanni?

I like the name. I especially like Gerald as the first name.

I agree with your mother in law. Giovanni Gerald sounds much better, but it's your child and it's not the worst name I've heard.

i agree it sounds better as Gerald Giovanni but i am not a fan of the name Gerald save for my dad :~) i think it is a better middle name

I've never liked the name Gerald. Giovanni is ok (and he could go by Gio). If you must use both names, I would switch them.
