I don't like music. At all. Any of it. Does this have a name?

To me, music is a intrusive noise. It gets in the way of my thoughts and prevents my structuring a sentence. Lately a friend has been trying to introduce me to some music he likes. Upon hearing my response to it, he said, "You seem to get the same things out of music as everyone else; you just don't seem to need any of it.

A few people had sent me mp3 files and to the untrained eye, I may have had a small music collection of about a hundred tracks. I deleted them all the other week, as a general clear-out of my hard-disc space. It didn't even cross my mind that people don't normally throw out their entire music collection (such as it was) because they'd rather have the space.

Can anyone else identify with this? Does it have a name? Oh, and in case you're wondering, I'm not tone-deaf or anything. I was tested for amusia last year and they concluded that I've got an excellent sense of pitch.

Update:

I should probably add that neither of my parents listen to music either, although I don't think it annoys them as much as it annoys me.

I can relate, though I don't have any mp3 files to delete. I own maybe 2 CD's though I couldn't tell you where they are. My husband and kids listen to music ALL the time. I can't tell you the lyrics to songs because the words all run together. I'm not anti music, but I don't need it like other people seem to. I don't relate when people say, "That song really speaks to me." I do like Christmas songs, I guess, but if I found out that there would be no more music in my life I don't think I'd be that upset. No more books, that's a whole other matter....

Hi, I can relate. I enjoy music - sometimes. I do draw pleasure from it, but true, only sometimes. Most of the time it feels as if I'm being blocked by its presence. Yes, it intrudes my space and thoughts and I can't seem to do anything while it's playing. Especially not hold a conversation *while someone is already talking to me from the song*.

Example: I hate it when I go to a coffee shop and try to have a conversation with someone and a person is screaming at me from the speakers about whatever they're singing about. This is an extreme example, let's just say that, most of the time, I would rather do what Carolyn here likes to do - not have any sounds bothering me and asking for attention. Silence is what I'm surronded by when alone at home - all the time. The only case when I turn the volume up or ask for a specific song is when I'm tipsy.

I've been studying music therapy, and usually what "experts" say is that different brains react different ways to different frequencies of music - but they do not say anything about someone disliking music entirely. (The word "dislike" in this case would just mean not like, in the way you don't like a particular color.) Does all music bother you, or have you just not found a style you like? Are you bothered by other noises? (Such as a person sniffling, or loud talking nearby?) If yes, maybe the issue is just that you don't like noise, not that you don't like music. If no, you are a rare individual.

I play classical guitar and I don't like music. Any music. I like playing an instrument, but having music around me jams my cerebral cortex and I have a hard time thinking or formatting a sentence. The only time I have music going in the background is when I DONT want to think. That is rare. I will watch a you tube video if there is a piece I am trying to learn and I want to hear how someone else did it, but I get more enjoyment out of watching the person than I do out of just listening. I can't think of any song I would rather listen to than listening to silence.

why can't people accept that I don't like music that much. It drives my husband nuts. My Mother is the same way. I only seem to like music I can dance to sometimes. I have sooooo many other interests. I don't hate music but I can't understand people who have to listen to something ALL the time. I like silence once in a while...no tv..no music ...nothing but silence. I guess I'm the odd one. Even as a teenager I didn't constantly listen to music like a lot of kids do. I enjoy nature sounds, sounds of birds and trees swaying, animals in the woods etc. Natural music I guess you'd call it. I always have fun projects to do that I enjoy, recipes to make, books to read etc.. I'm never, ever bored!!!

I am with you all the way. I used to like music and sang all the time. But anymore I can't stand music of any kind. I don't know if there is a name for this or not but if there is I have it also.

    Hope they keep it down,

I can relate too. I only like the music if there catchy. I don't like music because they just sing the same thing over and over again for like 4-5 minutes! Like the song I got a feeling or pink just give me a reason! ugh!
