I agree with UCANTCME. If your buddy checked the freon before you left, you either have a leak in the system, or your compressor is not cycling.
Open the hood and flip on the A/C. If the A/C compressor stay engaged for more than 60-90sec, then you have a bad switch, I would guess low pressure/cycling, but could be a different one. THe A/C system is freezing up, which is why you get really cold air then it gets warmer and warmer, because ice has formed.

THE JEEP WILL NOT HAVE A THERMOSTAT BUT RATHER IT COULD HAVE A BAD DRIER AND H-VALVE OR OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE EXPANSION VALVE.
YOU CAN ALSO HAVE A BAD PRESSURE SWITCH OR RELAY AS WELL.
EVEN THE A/C / HEATER CONTROLLER INSIDE COULD BE CAUSING THIS.
I WOULD HAVE A LOCAL INDEPENDENT AUTOMOTIVE A/C REPAIR SHOP CHECK THIS OUT FOR YOU IN THIS ORDER.
1. CHECK FREON LEVEL ON BOTH LOW AND HIGH SIDES.
2. IF OKAY THEN SCAN THE VEHICLES COMPUTER.
DO NOT GO TO THE DEALER OR ANY OF THOSE CHAIN STORES FOR SERVICE, THESE PLACES ARE JUST PARTS CHANGERS.

sounds to me you have a vacume leak under the hood their is a vacume line that opens the flow of anti freze to the heater core it is a valvue right in front of the overflow bottle check the vacume line going to that valvue also check the vacume line under the dash on the passenger side that is where it opens and closes the window that sends or deflects the cold and hot air good luck with it

You might have a leak in the system they may need to induce dye in the system to check it for leaks
