Why do my snails keep dying on me?

I have four aquariums... Two have turtles in them, one has an African Clawed Frog, and the last has a Betta fish. I keep buying Mystery snails to help clean the sides and bottoms of the aquariums but it seems like they never live past 2 months. From what I've read Mystery snails can live up to 2 years. So what am I doing wrong?

The turtle tanks have filters. The other two don't, but I clean them out thoroughly once a week. The snails die, no matter what I do! Any tips or suggestions?

Update:

The one in w/ my Betta is the one that most recently died. I have guppies in the tank as well... The Betta is so preoccupied w/ the guppies that it doesn't even pay attention to the snail. We do have additional food sources for them, they don't just eat algae and waste. I hear they like lettuce so I might stick a bit of that in the tanks for the live ones.

Mystery snails will go through their life cycles much faster in heated tanks than in cold tanks. If the temperature of the tank is in the 80s F, that could explain it.

Also snails need to be fed just like everything else you put in a tank. I made the mistake once of thinking that a snail could just live off algae, and it died within a month or so after I put it in. Live plants, sinking pellets, and vegetables like cucumbers, lettuce, and spinach are all good foods for snails.

Also aquarium salts and fish medications can kill snails. I always keep mine in a bucket with a screen lid and an aerator whenever I treat my tank.

Check out www.applesnail.net for more info if these possibilities don't check out.

Hope this was helpful. Good luck!

could be something in your tank or water, they're very sensitive to copper. Also more aggressive fish will pick on them, nibbling at their eyes and feelers. Other than that I'm not really sure, i recently had one of my mystery snails die, after only having him 4 months. You also should provide food for them other than just the algae in the tank, they gobble up zucchini and algae wafers that you would normally feed pleco's.

there has to be a substation amount of algea to keep them alive because even though there slow they expend alot of energy looking for algea so let your turtle tank get not dirty but let some greenish brownon bottom corners then get 1 snaill not mroe then it becomes a territorial thing and loos at where your buying them i got 5 neon tetras one time from a store and they all died in 1 week

well... the betta will pick at them. the turtle will try to eat them. i think you should try like a chinease algae eater or something. either that or get a in take or under ground filter. they are ok. carterages and stuff are pretty cheap. and if you are not over feeding they last a while.

Source(s): i used a filter inside my tank and the fish is fine. i tried snails... they were picked to death.
