Have had wood heat most of my life. Depending on the stove and wood, it's great. My preferred source of heat. Warms you up twice over. Once when you cut and split it and again when you burn it.

If you don't want the mess in the house, check into a outdoor woodburner which is hooked into your existing furnace. There is also pellet stoves which can be installed easier than wood burning fireplace and more efficient. An efficient fireplace or wood burner could cost as much as 8-10 thousand dollars intstalled.(which could heat a house for quit a few years) Theres more too it than you think.

We heat with a woodstove. here in MI the cost of propane or fuel oil is so high, the woodburner saves us over $2000 per winter. My wife likes it warm, so she keeps the house 80 degrees all winter long. I have land with lots of forest so the firewood is almost free. It is alot of work though. If you have to buy firewood, it probably is half the price of paying heat bills.

It's easier with the furnace, and easier to breathe with, The fireplace is good to cozy up with or showing off but thats about it.
