Friend has SEVERE tooth pain...BUT?

he has no insurance, and not enough money to cover costs to be seen. Two of his back molars have broken in half and his pain is getting worse. Ive told him over and over to go find a clinic, but of course he hasnt and it just has gotten worse. Im not sure what direction to tell him to go in. Ive looked online for ER dentists, but Im not getting any results for his situation. Any suggestions?

Update:

I thought about the regular ER but was wondering if they require money upfront-which he doesnt have. Im also worried about a bad infection he could possibly get-Ive heard horror stories of tooth infections seeping into the brain-is that possible?

Update 2:

In reply: Wish I could lend him the money but the quote he got on this awhile back was well over $1000- I have dental insurance so I cant imagine the bind he is in.

you are to be commended for realizing the urgency of your friend's situation. these broken teeth are a real and constant source of infection, and should be removed. your friend also needs treatment with antibiotics to get pressure of infection off these teeth and begin to help his pain. many dental offices will be willing to work with patients who are obviously in distress ( physically and financially). when looking one up in the directory, look for those that are open nights and weekends. they are usually set up on a different philosophy and are used to seeing emergencies. dont call up the doctor whose specialty is cosmetic dentistry, a whole different mindset for what your friend needs. also, consider a one-day denture clinic ( if there are any in your area). some of these offices will take out teeth really cheap even if you are not a denture patient. hope i have helped a little!

  • yes, dental infections can spread to the brain or anywhere else in the body for that matter. your friend really should have these teeth treated ASAP, he will feel a lot better afterwards.

if he is calling over the phone to clinics he might be getting quotes for root canals if he told them his tooth broke. because an extraction is typically $100 USD. unless it is a surgical extraction then it might be a bit more, but not much.

dental offices can get him in sooner than a clinic probably and a lot of them have payment plans. they usually won't turn someone away because they can't pay their bill up front. and it's the holiday's. so they are likely to be willing to work with him.

    good luck!

Many large city hospitals and dental schools have clinics where extractions are free or very cheap. If you go to the ER you are wasting your time and any money they do charge. Only a dentist will pull the teeth and that is what your buddy needs.

If he's in that much pain he can go to a hospital ER and they can refer him or give him some pain killers.

He might be able to pay the bill off in monthly payments, or maybe you could lend him the money?

    Good luck to your friend
